Grand Seiko

Grand Seiko

Until recently, Grand Seiko has been the haute horology division of Japanese watch giant, Seiko. Founded in 1960 and manufactured by Suwa Seikosha, a Seiko subsidiary, their first truly iconic piece debuted in 1967, the 44GS. This piece set both a deign standard and style, including the use of reflections or "sparkle of quality" with specially faceted hands and markers. Kintarō Hattori founded Seiko in 1881 and Shinji Hattori is the current CEO of Grand Seiko, making this one of the rare family owned watchmakers with over a century of uninterrupted operations. The fit and finish of watches are among the best in the world, with hands and cases finished via the Zaratsu technique, an ancient method used for polishing Samurai swords. The textured “Snowflake” dial is among the brand’s signature design elements, while the innovative Spring Drive combines a mechanical movement with precise quartz technology. Grand Seiko became a separate, independent brand in 2017, which distanced Japan's most prominent luxury watches from Seiko’s more affordable and diverse portfolio.
