Jaquet Droz

Swiss luxury watchmaker Jaquet Droz is a tale of two eras. Founded in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in 1738, Pierre Jaquet-Droz's advanced sound-centric clocks were chiming and playing music by the mid-1740’s. After lucrative business with Spain’s King Ferdinand VI, Pierre's passion turned to automata – animated dolls run by sophisticated clockwork mechanisms. Between 1768 and 1774, a trio of automata became legendary and are still functional at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. The company shut down following Pierre’s death, but was revived in the 1990’s. Despite a 200-year gap, the new company remains faithful to original 18th century, twin sub-dial designs. Sophisticated, miniature automata are also incorporated into limited edition watches. The Bird Repeater, Magic Lotus, and Charming Bird are wonders of horology with some mechanical animations lasting over four minutes.
